UPDATE: Police confirm identity of human remains found in flesh-eating case

25-year-old Zanele Hlatshwayo has been positively identified as the woman whose remains were found at a home in Rensburgdrift.

This was after a 32-year-old man, who is a traditional healer, confessed to Estcourt police that he was eating human flesh. Police made a grisly find at his home, the human remains of a female. Six people have since been arrested.

An appeal was made to community members whose family members were missing to contact local police.

“DNA tests were conducted on the families that came forward and the results came back this week. It was confirmed that the recovered body parts were that of Zanele Hlatshwayo (25) and her family was immediately informed,” commented police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele.

The six suspects have been charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder and possession of human body parts. They will make a second court appearance on September 28.

The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa welcomed the arrest of the suspects. “This type of crime is not acceptable in our community and such people deserve to stay in jail for a long time. We will ensure that the culprits receive the maximum sentence for their merciless acts,” he said.
