The school has now scooped seven awards at the Language Festival competition that was held at Ladysmith on August 17 and 18.

The Language Festival seeks to inculcate the culture of reading and presentation, as it includes poetry, drama, speech and storytelling. It must not be forgotten that the school is situated in a deep rural area, where most of the community members are unemployed.

“Eqhweni has always strived for excellence,” the Principal said, as he was ecstatic about the learners’ courageous efforts. Winning has now became part of the school’s genes.

The school’s Youth Development Committee says: “Whoever said winning is not everything, was definitely not talking about us.”

The school has now reached provincial level of Language Festival. On August 17 Khumalo Asanda and Mazibuko Nolwazi obtained first place in the Individual Poetry category. It must the noted that these learners are from grade R to six. The drama team also came back with first and second positions.

Some schools have an eye and talent for wining. The school wrapped up the competition on August 18 by claiming the top position in a seemingly difficult genre. Biyase Noxolo, a learner from grade nine, came first in the Contemporary Poetry genre. The learner is now busy preparing herself for the provincial round.

“I see Siyabonga Mpungose in you,” Mr NL Mdluli (Youth Development Co-ordinator) said as he praised the learner after the district elimination. The school looks forward to seeing the learners raise the Estcourt Circuit flag and that of the school high.
