Many locals would recall the recent articles in the Estcourt News, where Mohammed’s mom, Fiona Drew made an impassioned plea to locals to help her son regain his mobility. Mohammed has a debilitating illness that has seen him wheelchair bound.

As he has aged, he has outgrown several wheelchairs and more recently, his mobility was threatened when his current wheelchair no longer sufficed. Mohammed required a specialised wheelchair that was electronic to cater for his progressing illness. A motorised wheelchair would also give him freedom of movement in and outside his home, an essential if you’re confined to a wheelchair all day, every day.

Reading about Mohammed and his family’s plea, Roy Emanuel from Dormehl Phalane Property Group says his interest was piqued. Mr Emanuel buys and collects wheelchairs. Why, one may ask?

Here’s how he explains it: “My office is located next to the doctor’s surgery. So often I would see old gogos (grannies) being carried out, or dragged out. I would see them sitting on the lawn, waiting to be helped to get around and I decided I would collect wheelchairs and donate it to people who are in need.”

After reading a second article in the Estcourt News, Mr Emanuel said he instinctively knew the electric wheelchair he had acquired some time ago, was perfect for Mohammed. We set off to Mohammed’s home on a farm on Thursday morning and were met with what can only be described as sheer elation and heartfelt gratitude. It was extremely heart-warming to see Mohammed’s face light up as he saw a small crowd shuffle into the lounge to show him his new wheelchair.

“I don’t know whether to laugh or cry, I am blown away!” exclaimed Mohammed’s mom Ms Drew.

Mohammed was beaming with gratitude and his words of thanks and appreciation, mixed with curiosity, sent goose bumps and a few tears rippling through everyone in the room. After demonstrating the functions of the wheelchair, Mohammed said that he was happy and jested that he would now be ‘driving around.’

The family heartily thanked Mr Emanuel and his team from Dormehl who also did a few alterations on the wheelchair before Mohammed was comfortably seated and getting accustomed to his new wheels. Mr Emanuel extends his sincere gratitude to Ahmed from Hi-Q for his most generous sponsorship of batteries for Mohammed’s electric wheelchair.

“If we all do something small, we can make a big difference,” said Mr Emanuel.

When the Dormehl team called to find out his progress, Mohammed is enjoying the wheelchair, feeling very independent and is so happy, saying to his mom:

“I didn’t know my hand could work like this driving myself around!”

The Dormehl Properties team offload Mohammed’s new wheelchair.

Wondering what to do with the bread tags and plastic bottle tops you have been collecting? Don’t’ stop! It was agreed by everyone present that a community collection would most certainly benefit many individuals who are also in desperate need of wheelchairs.
